Getting Started
The first 30 days of HR onboarding (without the scavenger hunt)

New hires remember two things from week one: whether someone was glad they showed up, and whether the basics worked. Badge. Laptop. Payroll. Who to ask when Slack feels loud.
Everything else is detail. Get the basics right and the culture stuff has room to land.
Before day one
Send one email with start time, address, dress code if it matters, and who meets them at the door. Attach the forms you actually need signed, not every PDF in the company drive.
Create accounts early. Waiting until 9:15 on Monday to “set up IT” is how you lose half a day and look disorganized.
Assign a buddy who isn’t their manager. The buddy answers “where’s the kitchen” questions so the manager can do real work.
Week one
Keep the calendar light. Training dumps on day one feel productive for the company and overwhelming for the person.
Confirm personal data once, in one place: address, tax info, emergency contact, bank details. Re-asking the same questions in three tools is a classic own-goal.
By Friday, they should know how time off works, how expenses work, and who owns what. Not every policy, just the ones they’ll use in the first month.
Days 8 to 30
Schedule two short check-ins: end of week two, end of week four. Ask what was confusing. Fix the process, don’t just apologize.
Introduce goals gently. A 30-day plan with five outcomes beats a 40-slide onboarding deck nobody opens again.
If something still isn’t in the system (equipment, access, contract addendum), treat it as an open ticket with an owner. “We’ll get to it” is how day-30 still feels like day one.
One system helps more than another handbook
Handbooks go stale. Shared folders get messy. The teams that stay calm through growth usually keep employee records, documents, and leave in one HR workspace.
WerkIQ HR Management is aimed at that: a single place for the people data onboarding depends on, so day one isn’t a scavenger hunt across five tools. Start with the checklist above; add the system when the checklist alone stops being enough.
Sound like what your team is dealing with?
